Minisite with tutorials, tips, features on making the most of Native Instruments music production tools

I’m putting together a setup to compose my hockey theme masterpiece (yeah right), and here’s how it’s shaping up; I’m using Reaper as my host, Kore 2 as a sub-host and Koresounds as instruments. Two things I like about Kore for this project – one, it has just about every sound I’d want ready to go, so I won’t spend too much time in the black hole of sound design. Two, my instrument setup is abstracted away from the DAW as a Kore performance so I can easily migrate it to another DAW if need be.

Why Reaper? I’ve used Cubase and other spendier DAWs in the past but I don’t have access to those at the moment, and having created a couple of mini projects in Reaper in the last little while, it looks like it has everything I need. BTW, there’s a beta available for Mac now, so don’t feel frozen out.

I want to keep all my sounds bundled together in a Kore performance so I’ve created just one instance of Kore – the multi-out plugin version that has 8 stereo channels of output. Then my plan was to create 8 separate audio tracks and route the channels to them… I noticed that the Reaper plugin wrapper has a function to do exactly that:

Bam! That was easy. It builds the routing and creates the tracks to send to – no mucking about with the routing dialogs and matrix. So now it’s a simple matter of configuring my sounds in Kore – choosing sounds and setting the MIDI in and plugin-out settings for each one:

Nice and simple – first sound takes input from MIDI channel one and goes to plugin output one, second is on channel two and goes to output two, and so on.

Now, what about MIDI channels routed to Kore? You probably noticed the “Build 16 channels of
MIDI routing to this track” entry in the Reaper plugin wrapper. Guess what? It works. Only thing left to do is set up the MIDI input sources for the MIDI tracks.

Here’s a zip file containing my preliminary Reaper setup and Kore 2 performance if anyone wants to have a look. It’s in a pretty raw stage but the routing works.

So readers, are any of you using Kore 2 in Reaper? Have you learned any interesting tricks or pitfalls doing so? Let me know… in the meantime, I have a theme to compose!

    i’ve used Reaktor with Reaper on a PC and it’s been great.
    i recently moved over to an intel iMac and i’m migrating all my work over to it so i haven’t had a chance to test out the Beta of Reaper but so i’m debating on sticking with Reaper or getting Logic Express.

    Thanks for the tip, regend. Let us know how the beta works out on Mac… and yeah, I’ve had positive experience with Reaktor in Reaper on PC too. It’s a good stable combination.

    Tried Reaper on my Mac Mini (admittedly a bit slow) and the demo that comes with it just repeatedly crashed the application, maybe something to do with the ogg samples?

    Reaper wilted under the pressure of your Kore setup, but it would probably be ok if i tried it on a faster computer.

    Hmm, I’ve been messing around with Reaper and Kore and found the CPU usage to be a bit lighter and more stable than Sonar or Live. With it’s wicked nice editing and routing capabilities I’m hooked already! I’m going to put it through some more paces before deciding on whether it’ll be my go-to daw or not, but I’m quite impressed, and you have to like the openness of the program and it’s community.

    After purchasing Komplete 5, I downloaded Reaper “just for fun” until I could afford to upgrade my old Cubase version. I found that Reaper is just as suited to my VSTi-heavy recordings as Cubase was, just as stable, more flexible in many ways, and definitely less expensive. Cubase is a fine product, but I’ll stay with Reaper for now.

    Has anyone using this setup figured out an easy way to record the VST automation in Kore? How does this work if I want to record my knob-twiddling?

    Automation recording is covered in section 14.5 of the Reaper user manual. I’ve tried it and it works for me… Hope it works for you too!

    If you want a more direct approach to automation within Kore, try my Blackbox Reaktor knob recorder. Works with any instrument that can receive MIDI automation. It’s best for the type of automation that you’d normally do with an LFO, to animate an overall sound, rather than placing certain events at particular points in a track – for that, the DAW automation method is necessary.

    A disclaimer that got me confused for over an hour…. Not only do you have to set it to write…. but YOU MUST have the Kore VST visible while you are fiddling with the kore knobs or it won;t take changes and constantly default to the position in the minified kore…

    Also… does anyone know how I can use a spacebar in Kore with Reaper and not have it start the track?

    Right click on the title bar of the Kore plugin window and choose “send all keyboard input to plugin”. If you have the FX chain window showing instead of just the plugin window, this option is also available in the “fx” dropdown menu.

    I didn’t know about that automation gotcha with the Kore window not visible. Thanks for the info!

    Thanks for that tip!!! Do you happen to know how to lock the end marker of a midi item when you are recording in overdub mode? I have the main section looping for 4 measures and the midi event is only looping for one measure (set it up with the end marker)… as soon as I hit record (even though it is in Overdub mode), it moves the end marker to the end of the loop selection in the main screen as opposed to the midi item… which means I have to wait 3 measures to continue overdub and then adjust end marker after or I have to adjust the main loop to 1 measure so I can record. Kind of annoying since I don;t know how to “Lock” the end marker during recording (and quantizing as well (as soon as I quantize a swing…it shifts the end marker and throws the loop outta whack)

    Also Here is a neat tip to Kore/Reaper Users…
    1) Set up the Track with the Quantize Settings, Recording Settings, assign it to record with your Midi channel
    2) Attach Kore VSTi as FX
    3) Right Click on Track and click “Save Selected track as Track Template”
    4) Name it “Kore Instrument”
    5) Now when you want a Kore Track all you have to do is right click and go to “Insert Track from Template” and select “Kore Instrument”

    You can follow the same steps to set up Kore Effects as well.

    Thanks, I’ll have to make a Kore track template as you suggest. That’ll save time and clicks.

    I’m not sure how to work around your overdub problem… my advice is to ask at the official Reaper forum. If it can’t do it the way you want, there’s a good chance they’ll implement your idea in the next release – they are extremely responsive to user suggestions.
